Part Eight

Thursday 7:38 AM MDT

Chris had asked Captain Jerry Dunbar to help him with a roadblock, even though the house was outside of the jurisdiction of the Denver Police Department. Jerry had been only too glad to cooperate with Chris and his team. He understood that Beddlington was a powerful man and that he might have connections with the other police departments. He called his supervisor and got the permission he needed, and had his men set up a roadblock a mile from the house on both sides. Weatherby and Team 9 would be arriving soon and would take the perimeter of the house, preventing any escape over the wall. J.D. had arrived five minutes before with the warrants they needed for the arrests of Lucas Beddlington, Chico Martinez, Kindra James, and an unknown scientist they figured was also hiding out inside the residential compound. They were already decked out in their ATF uniforms with flak jackets. They waited impatiently for Team 9 to show up.

Suddenly, their radios crackled to life. "They're packing the limo with suitcases! I see Chico packing the trunk! Beddlington has died his hair black and the woman is no longer a blonde. They're going to be headed our way in a minute. I see another man talking to Beddlington. They are getting in the car now! Chris, what do you want me to do?" Vin was ready for action. His high powered rifle was in his left hand, ready to aim when he got the word.

Chris reached for his microphone. "Take out a tire when they reach the end of the driveway. We'll take them now!"

Vin dropped his mike and aimed his rifle. He followed the vehicle down the drive and his finger squeezed the trigger as the limo got twenty feet away from the gate. The gate started to open as the car approached. The shot rang out and Chris and his men leapt forward to enter the compound through the open gate. The front right tire blew. The limo lurched to the right.

Suddenly, the car was thrown into reverse and Chico maneuvered the vehicle backwards, accelerating as he drove back to the house. The four men ran after the car, guns at the ready. The small man that had been watching the limo drive away from the house panicked and ran back into the mansion. Chico stopped the car by the front door of the mansion and he leapt out of the driver's door, firing his automatic weapon at the approaching ATF agents.

Vin, after taking the shot that flattened the tire of the limo, dropped his rifle and jumped on his motorcycle. He immediately fired the bike up and raced down the hill to back up his friends. He almost tipped the bike over at the bottom of the hill, but he wasn't going to let his companions take gunfire without his help. He straightened himself up and roared up the driveway. He dropped the bike and took cover behind a wall of a garden, finding himself beside Chris.

"Glad you could join us." Chris nodded as he straightened to fire at Martinez over the wall. He ducked down again as bullets sprayed the wall just above his head. Chris caught Josiah's eye. He was along side the house and Chris motioned for him to move forward. Chris and Vin rose to fire again at Martinez, giving Josiah the cover he needed. Chris heard fire coming from further down the wall. He knew that J.D. and Nathan were also covering Josiah as he made his way to the front of the mansion. Josiah got to the corner and as all four of his friends fired, he ducked around the edge and made his way quickly to where he had a shot at the giant. Josiah saw that the rear passenger door was open and that Chico was the only one still outside. The other two had disappeared back into the house.

Josiah stood and aimed his handgun. Chico saw him and turned his automatic rifle toward the big agent but he was a second too slow. Josiah squeezed the trigger and Chico went down. The giant Hispanic tried to stand again and lifted the rifle to take another shot, but Josiah fired three more times. Chico fell, his life finished. He had given his life for the man that he loved, the sadistic monster that was somewhere inside the mansion. Josiah waved for the other four to join him.

They raced to join Josiah and then waited for Chris to direct them. Their leader signaled for J.D. and Nathan to go around back, looking for a rear entrance that Beddlington or the others might try to use. As J.D. and Nathan ran towards the rear of the house, Chris, Vin, and Josiah burst through the front door. They slowly worked their way through the rooms on the first floor. The room at the end of the hallway was closed and as they got to it, they could hear someone inside the room, cursing and throwing things around. Crash! The sound of breaking glass caused them to crash through the door. Inside, they found a woman they assumed was Kindra James. She was a brunette now but they could all see what had beguiled Buck. She was truly a temptress. She stood in the middle of the bedroom, a bottle of perfume in her hand. She whirled around at the sound of the door crashing in on her and she threw the bottle at Vin, who was the first one through the door. He easily ducked the projectile and it broke against the wall behind him. Three guns were pointed at her and she sank to the floor, sobbing hysterically.

She suddenly looked up at them and hissed, " I hope he's dead! I hope he suffered like I did."

Josiah moved forward quickly and he pulled out his handcuffs and placed Miss James under arrest. "Go on. Find Beddlington." He motioned with his head for the other two agents to continue searching the house. He pulled Kindra to her feet and frisked her for weapons.

As Nathan and J.D. came around the corner of the mansion, they spotted a man coming out of the house. He had a briefcase in his hand and he was making his way across the deck that ran the full length of the house. J.D. had his gun out and trained on the little man. They knew from the tapes that this wasn't Beddlington. Nathan moved forward and called out to the balding man in front of him, "Halt! ATF! You're under arrest!"

The man turned quickly and flung the briefcase at Nathan and then, took off running towards a building that Nathan suspected was a garage. Nathan was much quicker than the little man and he tackled him halfway between the deck and the building. He put his knee in the man's back and pulled his right arm behind his back. "J.D., go on in the house. Help the others. I got this little weasel." He clicked the handcuffs firmly in place on the man's wrist.

J.D. nodded and ran onto the deck. He entered the house through the door the man had come out of. He listened carefully for the sounds of his fellow agents. He heard them coming down the hallway towards him and he called out to let them know that he was in the house. J.D., gun at the ready, moved forward and came to an open door. He quickly glanced inside and saw a staircase leading down to a basement.

"Chris, I found a way down. Cover me as I go to the basement." J.D. turned the corner and slowly started down the steps.

Chris and Vin were with him a few seconds later. The three of them carefully made their way down, stopping at the bottom. They peered around the wall and found a hallway stretching away from them. There were two doors on either side of the hall and an open door at the end of the hallway, mirroring the hallway upstairs. Quietly, they started down the hall, each of them on full alert. Vin had just checked the first room on the right and J.D. was preparing to go into the first room on the left when they heard voices. The sound was coming from the room at the end of the hallway and Chris made the decision to skip the other two rooms and head for the end room. As he got closer, he recognized the voices coming from the room. It was his own voice talking to J.D. He was encouraging the young man to "Go for it". "You know you want to do it, so go ahead. Do it!" Chris stopped dead in his tracks. He felt a hand gripping his heart and his stomach tied itself in knots as he heard the younger man reply to his encouraging words. He knew what was coming next. This was the tape that Beddlington had played for Buck the night he had assaulted him. Chris froze. He looked back at J.D. and saw the astonished look on the young man's face. Tears clouded Chris's eyes and Vin saw the look of fear on his face. Vin moved ahead of Chris and as he did so, he tugged on his sleeve. Chris took a deep breath and motioned for J.D. to stay back. He then turned and crept up the hall behind Vin.

They stopped and gathered themselves before making their move into the large, almost empty, room. Vin went low and Chris stayed high and together, they forged their way into the room. There, in the middle of the room, stood Lucas Beddlington. He was facing the doorway and as the agents came barreling into the room, he started to laugh. Chris and Vin stopped cold just inside the door. Both had their gun aimed at the man's heart.

"Welcome, Sergeant Larabee," Lucas exclaimed as he saw the lead agent enter the room. "I'm so glad you could join me for this interesting bit of tape. Officer Wilmington found it quite entertaining. I'm sure you will, too. Of course, at this point in the tape, your friend and partner was just beginning to discover what was going to happen to him. I have the feeling, Sergeant, that you already know what happened to him."

The tape continued and suddenly, Chris could hear the sounds of J.D. having intercourse, his moans and words of enjoyment caused Chris to drop his head and bite back the rage that filled his soul. Vin never took his eyes off of Beddlington but he figured out what the bastard in front of him was referring to and he felt the anger building inside of him also.

"You fuckin' monster, you are under arrest for the kidnapping of a federal agent!" Chris took a step forward and Vin could see out of the corner of his eye that his best friend was about to loose it. Chris's hands were trembling, his jaw was clenched so tight, Vin wondered if it might break.

"Oh, Larabee, this is the really good part! You wouldn't want to miss this. Your young stud was really going at it and Wilmington was screaming at you to make him stop. He was in so much pain and he couldn't understand why the two of you would do this to him. You see, Sergeant, I have found that there is just about nothing else more devastating to a man than being raped by a more powerful man. It takes away all he has ever stood for and a man like Wilmington, who enjoys his sex with women so much and who is so set against rape, well, it completely tore him to shreds, both ways I'm sure." Beddlington started to laugh again, doubling over as he did so.

Chris started to attack Beddlington and Vin reached out and grabbed his arm to stop him. "No!" He glared into his friend's eyes and forced him to stop. "Let me do it!" Vin turned back to Lucas.

Vin had taken his eye off of the bastard in front of him for only a few seconds but that was all it took for Beddlington to pull the small gun from the back of his belt. He held it in his right hand and pressed it against his own temple. Vin stopped his forward movement and put his left hand up, as if that would stop Beddlington from pulling the trigger.

Lucas smiled at Vin and then turned his full attention to Chris. "He cried a lot during that week and he called out your name almost constantly at the end You see, Larabee, you came to visit him every night. You would sit and hold him and tell him that you would take care of everything. He would beg you to take him home, away from the pain and despair. But you would accuse him of all sorts of things, like bedding your wife and, eventually, you would push him away and tell him that you had a new best friend and that you didn't want him around anymore. Evidently, he was responsible for the death of your wife and young son. You told him so over and over again. And then you would leave him, telling him he deserved to be punished for the hurt he had put you through. Oh, how he begged you to take him with you. He screamed out his apologies and admitted that he was responsible for Adam's fiery death. It was really quite heart breaking, hearing him cry like that. But you simply laughed and left him alone to face the excruciating pain that each injection brought." Beddlington took a step backwards as Chris tried to get past Vin. He smiled at Chris and continued his diatribe. "Matheson didn't fully understand what he had created when he came to me with his concoction. He didn't know at first that it was a slow acting poison and that with four or five injections, the subject would suffer an agonizing, slow death within the week. He never bothered to work on an antidote, so you see, your best friend will die soon and he will go to his grave believing that you and Mr. Dunne were responsible for the savage attack that he endured. By the time Chico got done with him the second time that night, I'm sure he wanted to die. I understand Chico is quite large and he told me he had never enjoyed himself so much as he did that night. Oh, I particularly liked this part of the tape." Beddlington held up a finger and tilted his head so he could hear the voice on the tape. It was J.D. and he was saying, "Man, Buck, I was really looking forward to that. I hope you had as much fun as I did. That was the best I've ever had. Can we do it again?" The editing of the tape was masterful and Chris cringed at ever word.

"You goddam son of a bitch! I'll kill you!" J.D. launched himself from the doorway, heading straight for Beddlington. Chris tried to stop him, launching himself at the young agent and tackling him just short of Beddlington. They fell in a heap at the criminal's feet. The sound of the gun firing immediately forced them to halt and look up at Beddlington. He was still laughing as he fell toward them, his blood and brains splattered across the floor. He hit the cold cement, lifeless, his bloody head inches from J.D.'s face. J.D. forced his body away from the monster that now lay dead, his open eyes still taunting the two agents.

Vin pulled Chris away from the corpse and took his head and held it between his two hands. "Look at me, Chris! Look at me!" Vin was scared. He had never seen Chris Larabee look so totally devastated as he did now. He face was ash white and his breathing was ragged. A vein stood out on his head and his hands twitched, flexing slightly, as if he wanted to choke the life out of the man who now lay dead on the floor in front of them, his blood slowly flowing towards them. Although Vin held his head, Chris's eyes were glued to Beddlington. Vin pulled him tight against his chest and held him there, his strong arms wrapped around Chris's back. He felt Chris pull in a long breath, and then he felt the tears wetting his shirt. Only then, did Vin look around to find where J.D. had ended up. The boy was huddled in a corner of the room, his arms wrapped tightly around his legs, his face buried forcefully against his knees. Vin could not help but be reminded of Buck, who had been sitting just like that when they had run into his hospital room after he had been injected with the serum of Beddlington's. He wanted to go to the boy and hold him also but he couldn't leave Chris right now.

Josiah had been standing in front of the house. He had used his cell phone to call Captain Dunbar for transport and was waiting for a squad car when Nathan came around the corner of the house with his prisoner. The little man was in handcuffs, his face and clothes slightly grass stained from his fall. He looked defeated and Josiah couldn't help but smile in triumph at the woman sitting in the limo beside him.

Nathan was smiling too as he stopped in front of Josiah. " He tried to run but I stopped him. I hope there's some information in this case that we can use. I have the feeling that this is the chemist who concocted the serum that Buck was injected with." Nathan held up the brown leather briefcase.

Josiah nodded and nudged Kindra to move over in the limo. He pointed toward the seat and the man sat dejectedly beside the beautiful woman. "I called for a squad to transport them. I think I hear the siren approaching now. Do you think Chris and the others need help?"

Before Nathan could answer, they heard the single gunshot. They looked at each other and Nathan nodded for Josiah to go ahead and check it out. He could handle the two prisoners with help just seconds away. Josiah ran into the house, listening intently for any sounds that might tell him where his comrades were. There was total silence. He didn't bother with the hallway since he had just come from there. He headed toward the kitchen and found the open door and the staircase leading down. As quickly as he dared, he made his way down and quietly moved toward the end room. He stopped outside the room. The smell of fresh blood came to him and he stood with his back against the wall, his gun at the ready. He quickly glanced in and then he lowered his gun and made his way to Vin's side.

"Take care of J.D. Get him out of here if you can. He's been through enough for one day." Vin was still holding Chris tight against himself, and Josiah wasn't sure if their leader was injured or not. Vin seemed to read his mind. "He's not injured but both of them are probably in shock. I'll tell you about it later. Son of a bitch killed himself just before J.D. got to him."

Josiah nodded and moved over to where the young agent sat. He reached down gently, and pulled J.D. to his feet. He tucked the lad into a firm embrace and led him past the body and out of the room. He could tell the boy's legs were about to give out and he all but carried his friend up the stairs. The boy had wrapped his arms around Josiah's big chest and Josiah held him tight. Gingerly, they walked out into the sunlight just as Nathan was assisting a Denver police officer and Captain Dunbar get the two prisoners into the rear of a squad car.

Nathan turned to face them, his eyes peered anxiously into Josiah's. The big agent shook his head and helped J.D. sit on the steps of the porch. "Vin's downstairs with Chris. Beddlington's dead. Vin said he did it himself. Chris looked bad. You might want to go check on him. I'll stay with J.D." Josiah had no clue as to what might have happened in the basement. Seeing the effect it had on Chris and J.D. though, he knew it had to be horrible. What had Beddlington done before killing himself? Josiah wasn't sure he really wanted to know.
