(do I really want to claim this??)
"JD?"
"Oh! Hi, Buck," the young man smiled a genuine greeting to his friend.
"What the hell is that?"
JD looked perplexed as the ladies man looked down toward his feet. "What's what Buck?"
The mustache man pointed at the ground. "That, what is that? I thought you wanted to be a cowboy?"
"Yeah, sure I do," JD stammered unsure of what his friend was getting at.
"Then what is that?"
JD looked down at the creature sitting at his feet, looking up at the two men with large soulful eyes. "It's a dog, Buck."
The taller man laughed, "That's a dog!"
JD frowned, "Sure it is Buck and lots of cowboys have dogs."
Laughter boomed even louder from the rogue. He looked at the small brown, dog again. "Not like that," he managed to get out between chuckles. "He looks more like a sausage or something."
JD looked at the dog sitting at his feet. Well he thought he was sitting it was hard to tell. The pooch had small, short legs that held up a body that was long. . . well like Buck said it was shaped like a sausage. He may have been sitting but it was more like his long body just dropped a little closer to the ground. The guy he got it from told him it was a rare breed, a Dachshund he thought it was called. Even with it's strange shape, JD still thought it was rather cute with it's long floppy ears, pointed nose and those big. . . yes. . . puppy dog eyes.
"What makes you think a cowboy would have something like that?" Buck continued to tease the young man.
"'Cause one told me to get one," JD defended himself.
Buck laughed even harder, "Oh Kid, you were had."
JD puffed up his chest really offended. "I know I heard right."
"Oh, you did huh?"
"Yeah, he said to get a long little doggie."
