Here are the responses to Lady Angel's challenge to write a story on the first day at school.
Well...it's a little OT...not too much hurt, at least not until Mary gets a load of this conversation... Hope you like it. The challenge...100 words....on the first day of school.
"Awh, Chris! Do I have to?"
"Your ma says yes....Itâs your first day. I bet you're gonna have fun... I liked school!."
"You went to school?"
Chris laughed. "Sure... most of the time... except when I took off to go swimming."
"You took off?"
"Sometimes... on nice, sunny days."
"You liked school?"
"Most of it."
"What didn't you like?"
"Gettin' caught!!! That sure wasn't fun."
"For skipping?"
"For skippin, smokin, pulling girls hair, fightin, not doin my work... for...
"This is going to be fun!!"
"Ah... now wait..."
"You must a had a real good time. Wait until I tell ma..."
"Billy.... don't you go tellin' your ma."
"Bet she doesnât know half the fun you had."
"Ah, hell."
"Chris! Is that where you learned to cuss, too?"

"Hello! Anyone home?"
"Buck!" JD squealed as he ran out of the den.
Wilmington bent down to scoop up the small boy. "Well?" he asked. "How was it?"
"It was so cool my teacher is called Miss Griffiths we did numbers and I gotted it all right and I knew all my letters and she said I was very smart and we had recess and there's a swing but I don't think Vin liked it so much 'cause the teacher at recess tolded him off when he made the big kids let me on the swing and we..."
"Breath JD."

Chris followed Buck inside, but while JD gushed out his description of the day, Chris had to go in search of his adoptive son.
"Hello?"
"Hi."
"So how was it?"
"Okay."
"Just okay?"
"JD had fun."
"I asked if you liked it?"
"I did a picture, that was okay."
Chris sat down on the floor next to Vin. He had heard JD say that Vin got into trouble for defending him.
"It gets better, you'll get used to it and there is always home at the end of the day."
Vin lent against Chris contentedly. "I know," he sighed.

"Your name really Buck?"
"Yeah."
"That ain't a real name."
"'Tis so."
"Where'd you live?"
"Motel."
"People don't live in motels."
"Can too."
"You a gypsy?"
"No"
"Bet you are, my dad says you can't trust gypo's, he says they're all thieves."
"Ain't no gypsy, an' I ain't a thief."
"Gypo, gypo!"
"Take that back!"
"Make me! Go on try it!"
"Ow!"
"Say it!"
"You ain't a gypsy."
"What's going on here? Fighting already Wilmington?…Well?"

"Hey, Chris!"
The young man waved as Buck bounded out of his mother's car. "Hey!"
"Man, am I looking forward to this!" Buck stared, jaw dropping. "Look at all those beauties!"
Chris rolled his eyes as the horndog salivated over a nearby red head.
"Uhm, Chris?"
"I'll see you in class." He shook his head as his friend grinned and took off.
He strategically chose a spot by the wall.
One. Two. Three —
"Hey! Get away from my girlfriend!"
Buck blurred by, a red letterman jacket in pursuit.
He rolled his eyes. And it was only the first day of school.

Sarah stared up at the huge ediface of the school. Her jaw dropped.
"Sarah, honey?"
"No, daddy."
"No?"
"I don't wanna go. What if I get lost?"
"Kyle's here, honey. Mike too."
"But what if I can't find them?"
"Then one of the nice teachers will help."
"Okay, but what if someone picks on me?" She grinned up at her father. "Will you glare them away?"
He smirked.
Sarah smacked him a kiss, bouncing off.
And no, he didn't skip work to check on his baby girl.
Really, he didn't.

The sun rose.
And he borrowed deep into his blankets.
His mother called.
He pretended not to hear.
The time had come,
An appointment was made.
No time to waste.
His mother would say,
"Darlin' It's the clothes that make the man."
And so a trip to the tailor.
Was in dire need.
Yes, the need was great.
The day was approaching fast.
And to dress the part was the plan.
The day was at hand.
And he in his double-breasted suit, green shirt and tie.
Was the best-dressed first grader.
On his very first day of school.

The first day of school arrived. JD had bounded out the door, full of excitement while Vin walked like he was going to a funeral. Chris placed a comforting hand on the boy's shoulder. The four climbed into the truck and headed out.
Arriving at school, they watched the boys walk up the steps. Chris could almost feel the fear rolling off his son. Neither man was prepared, though, as the backpack dropped and the little boy ran back, wrapping his arms around the man's leg.
"Don't wanna go."
Wrapping his arms around the boy, Buck sighed, "Ah, JD."

Vin Tanner stared up at the stature guarding the front step of the school and moved a closer to the man holding his hand.
"You okay, cowboy?"
Tousled curls bobbed in reaction to the nod.
"I'm scared."
"It's okay to be scared, but you're gonna be just fine. You need anything, you just find Mrs. Welles, okay?"
"Okay."
Vin still wasn't sure. A small object was pressed into his hand, and he looked down to see the shiny rock that Chris' first son had given him.
"For luck."
The two missing front teeth made the smile that much more precious.

Feedback would be greatly appreciated — this is my first time doing this!
The first day of school was tomorrow and Vin lay in bed petrified. It wasn't who to play with at recess or how to discreetly ask to go to the bathroom that terrified Vin, but the possibility of being completely unable to answer any questions correctly. After what seemed like hours of tormented tossing and turning, Vin got up and headed out for the rocker and Chris's comforting.
"Don't worry, Cowboy," Chris whispered, "they always spend the first two weeks reviewing what you learned last year." His few simple word's soothed away Vin's worries and soon he was asleep.

He peeked around the corner, watching the small crowd make its way into the room. One of the students looked his way, so he pulled his head back from sight.
"I can do this. I can do this..." he repeated. He abandoned the mantra and banged his head back against the concrete. "'Splain to me again how I got roped into this...."
"Y'all lost the bet," Vin answered dryly. "Better git afor you're late."
Still uneasy, he headed into his classroom, every eye on him.
"Evenin' all. Welcome to Women's Studies, I'm Professor Wilmington..."
