Ezra walked down the main street of
Four Corners musing over the turn his life had taken since that fateful day
he'd met Chris Larabee.
It was not surprising that he and
Larabee did not always see eye to eye. Ezra's own nature caused him to keep
himself distant from the other regulators, but Larabee tried to stay away from
the others out of pain and grief. Ezra had never understood his reluctance to
allow the men he called friends to help him through the grief of losing his
wife and child.
Ezra caught sight of Chris outside
the sheriff's office. He watched him for a few moments and noticed an
unexpected emotion in the gunslinger's expression.
He was lonely.
Shaking his head and telling himself
that he was simply going to be brushed off, Ezra
walked over to Chris and asked, "Mr. Larabee, I was just about to partake
of a libation. Would you care to join me?"
Chris looked up at Ezra Standish and
almost told him to go away. But he stopped himself and gave him a small smile,
"Much obliged, Ezra. Always appreciate a pard buyin' me a drink."
Ezra blinked, as Chris patted his
shoulder before walking towards the saloon. He almost blurted, "But that's
not what I meant!" He stopped himself and shook his head. Somehow, he
thought he'd just been had.
