This came to me today as I was listening to the radio.  The lyrics are at the end of the story.  Enjoy.

Jim looked around the empty loft and sighed.  Waiting wasn't going to make it any easier and there wasn't anyone else to help.  It was up to him.  He was once again on his own.  Alone.

Jim grabbed the duster and cleaning supplies and headed upstairs.  It was always best to start at the top and work down.

A few hours later, he picked up the laundry basket and walked out of their… his bedroom.  The sheets had been changed, the walls wiped down with cleaner, the dust removed.  All of his clothes were either in the washing machine or waiting to be cleaned.  The old sheets would soon join the pile, along with all of the towels.

He continued to move through their… his house cleaning as he went.  The faint scent of perfume was soon replaced by soap.  The clean clothes and linens smelled like the new laundry soap he had purchased.  The couch and chair smelled like upholstery cleaner. The drapes would be back from the cleaners in a few days.  The wood had been refinished and stained a slightly different color.

Jim collapsed in a chair after he was done.  He looked around the… his clean place and sighed.  Taking a small sip of beer he tried to bury his grief.  Tomorrow was a work day and some of his coworkers could be very cruel.  Jim didn't want to leave any dents in his armor for the pain to get through.

He was alone again.  But that was okay because alone was safe.  No one was getting back in this time.

The end.

Words and music by Bert Berns
Sung by The Jarmels, Paul Davis and others.

A little bit of soap
Will wash away your lipstick on my face
But a little bit of soap
Will never, never, never ever erase
The pain in my heart and my eyes
As I go through the lonely years
A little bit of soap
Will never wash away my tears

Mmm, a little bit of soap
Will wash away your powder from my chin
A little bit of soap
Will never, never, never ever begin
To take away the hurt that I feel
As I go through the lonely years
A little bit of soap
Will never wash away my tears, mmm, mmm, mmm

Have you heard when love begins to die
It leaves someone to cry night and Day
Like a bird, you left your robin´s nest
And-a just like all the rest you flew away

Mmm, a little bit of soap
Will take away your perfume eventually
But a little bit of soap
Will never wash away the memory
Of  your name in the night
That I call through the lonely years
A little bit of soap
Will never wash away my tears

I´ll never lose the memory of your name in the night
That I call through the lonely years
A little bit of soap will never wash away my tears
Mmm, a little bit of soap-a
Will never wash away my tears

Mmm, it´s gonna never, never, never
Uh-huh, wash away my tears
